(FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.) - The 2009 USA South Women's Soccer Tournament began on Tuesday, November 3 as three of the top four seeds advanced to the semifinals. Top-seeded Meredith cruised past eighth-seeded Ferrum, 7-2, second-seeded Christopher Newport topped seventh-seeded N.C. Wesleyan, 4-0, third-seeded Greensboro upended sixth-seeded Averett, 2-0, while penalty kicks were needed as fifth-seeded Methodist advanced past fourth-seeded Shenandoah, 1-1 (3-1 in penalty kicks).
The tournament now shifts to the Smith River Sports Complex in Martinsville, Virginia for the semifinal and championship games. The first semifinal contest will take place at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, November 6, as Meredith will battle Methodist. In semifinal game number two at 2:30 p.m., Christopher Newport will take on Greensboro. The winners of the two games will compete for the tournament title on Saturday, November 7 at 2:00 p.m.
Seeding for the tournament is determined by a point system. Each Conference win is equal to three points while each Conference tie is equal to one point.
